Joint custody means both parents share responsibilities for their child. It includes joint physical custody, where the child lives with each parent for a period, and joint legal custody, where both parents share decision-making responsibilities. This arrangement requires cooperation and communication between the parents.
Do children have a say in custody decisions?
Children's preferences may be considered by the court, depending on their age and maturity level. While a child's opinion is taken into account, it is not the sole factor in deciding custody. The court prioritizes the child's best interests above all when making decisions.
How do visitation rights work?
Visitation rights are granted to the non-custodial parent to ensure they maintain a relationship with the child. The visitation schedule is typically outlined in the custody agreement and may include weekends, holidays, and vacation periods. Both parents are encouraged to be flexible and communicate well for success.
What if a parent violates the custody order?
If a parent violates a custody order, the other parent can contact the court to report the violation. It is best to document violations and seek legal counsel to address these issues properly.
